Academic Celebration for Prof. Dr. Karl Christian Felmy

Prof. Dr. Karl Christian Felmy, who for many years participated in the LWF dialogue with the Orthodox churches, was honored on May 5, 2018, on the occasion of his 80th birthday with an academic celebration hosted by the Protestant Faculty of Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany.

The celebration was organized by the General Secretary of the Martin-Luther-Bund, Pastor Michael Hübner, in cooperation with the Protestant Faculty. It took place in Wassersaal, in the sparklingly restored banquet hall of the Orangerie in the Castle Garden, with the participation of numerous international guests. After a greeting from Prof. Dr. Anselm Schubert, the current chair of the Protestant Faculty, a laudatio was presented by Prof. Dr. Jennifer Wasmuth of the Institute in Strasbourg, along with lectures by Prof. Dr. Heinz Ohme (Humboldt University, Berlin) and Prof. Dr. Daniel Benga (Ludwing Maximillian University, Munich). The program, which was framed by the organ music of the University’s music director, Prof. Dr. Konrad Klek, was led by Prof. Dr. Haçik Rafi Gazer, who during the winter semester of 2006/2007 was called to take the position formerly held by Prof. Felmy. In the various presentations, the contributions of Prof. Felmy’s work, especially in the area of prayer in the Orthodox liturgy and iconography, as well as his multifaceted ecumenical engagement, were brought forward and their ongoing significance explored. The contributions are available online in German in the journal Ostkirchliche Studien.
